The liberation war affairs ministry has decided to cancel around 3,000 certificates of freedomfighters. These certificates were obtained illegally without any recommendations of the NationalFreedom Fighter Council (Jatiya Muktijoddha Council or Jamuka). There are some governmentsecretaries among the illegal certificates holders. The ministry decided to form a special tribunal in this connection. Besides, a provision also hasbeen adopted that if Jamuka does not recommend anyone for the certificate, he can appealagainst the decision. It has been known from a concerned source of liberation war affairsministry. The ministry said there are more than 3,000 people who got their certificates without theapproval of Jamuka. A total of 11,150 people, including doctors, teachers, engineers, bankersand other government and private officers, received freedom fighter certificates during 5 yearsof Awami League-ruled government.Jamuka said, it has been told that the minister and state minister have the right to issue acertificate to someone in special and urgent cases, only if the ministry approves the person asa genuine freedom fighter. But the ministers exploited their powers. They issued certificates on the basis of favouritismwithout considering or examining the authenticity of the applicants.Liberation war affairs minister Mozammel Haque and Jamuka director general Syed MahbubHossain confirmed Prothom Alo that Health secretary Niaz Uddin Miya and former jointsecretary of the liberation war affairs ministry Abul Kashem Talukdar also received thecertificates as freedom fighters without any recommendations of Jamuka.A circular of the prime minister’s office made it clear that a freedom fighter must mention hisidentity while joining his job. If he claims himself as a freedom fighter later, it will not beconsidered. But a freedom fighters’ list was published before January 5, mentioning several secretaries’names in it who submitted their FF certificates after joining their jobs. The officials are health secretary Niaz Uddin Miya, liberation war affairs secretary K H MasudSiddiqui, science and technology secretary A K M Amir Hossain, prime minister’s formersecretary Molla Wahidduzaman, housing and public works minister KhondokarShawkat Hossain and liberation war affairs joint secretary Abul Kashem Talukdar.Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) is investigating into this issue.
